Job Description

Fenix is looking for an experienced, highly motivated and disciplined Accountant with a passion for entrepreneurship, renewable energy, and financial inclusion to join our team. This position is a key role within the new country operations of a fast-paced start up at the front lines of renewable energy and mobile payment technology.

The Accountant will be an integral part of the Fenix Finance Team, collaborating with the Finance Manager to provide timely and accurate financial information to management by researching and analyzing accounting data and preparing financial reports as well as implementing processes and controls to ensure best practices and adherence to global accounting standards. The role will be an important aspect of helping Management create strategic growth plans, assess and improve portfolio health and raise the equity and working capital needed to achieve the company’s ambitious goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare, examine, and analyze accounting records, financial statements, and other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness, and conformance to reporting and procedural standards
  • Analyze business operations as well as trends in revenues, costs, financial commitments and obligations, to project future revenues and expenses or to provide advice
  • Develop, maintain, and analyze budgets, preparing periodic reports that compare budgeted costs to actual costs
  • Compute statutory deductions owed and ensure compliance with payment, reporting and other Governance requirements
  • Answer accounting procedure questions by researching and interpreting accounting policy and regulations
  • Report to management regarding the finances of establishment
  • Establish Chart of accounts, and assign entries to proper accounts
  • Maintain internal controls by preparing and recommending policies and procedures
  • Substantiate financial transactions by auditing documents
  • Reconcile financial discrepancies by collecting and analyzing account information
  • Comply with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying requirements; enforcing adherence to requirements; filing reports; advising management on needed actions
  • Maintain financial security by following internal controls
  • Protect operations by keeping financial information confidential
  • Liaise with the external auditor during the audit process

Required Skills & Qualifications/Experience:

  • University degree, with full or part ACCA or CPA Zambia
  • Acumen in accounting and financial issues and procedures
  • Detail-oriented, with a highly developed sense of reliability and accuracy
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Trustworthiness and willingness to take responsibility
  • Outstanding written and verbal communications skills (English)
  • Experience and proficiency in accounting software tools, i.e. Quickbooks
  • Experience and proficiency in excel
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and collaborative nature
  • Strong work ethic and integrity
  • A passion for Fenix and our customers!

High Desired Skills

  • Work experience in a multinational company or financial institution, preferably with operations in Africa
  • Experience with enterprise resource planning systems
  • Proficiency in Nyanja, Bemba or other local language highly desired
