Summary

Software and data are critical to our business at Fenix.  Our custom software platform is used every day to support  our customers, gather data from our products, and feed real-time insights to every part of our business.  

We are looking for an experienced software architect to design, build, and scale the next generation of our software products at Fenix International. You will be building systems at the forefront of IoT and financial services in sub-saharan Africa.  Your work will enable Fenix’s mission to bring life-changing energy products and inclusive financial loans to customers across Africa.

Our flagship product, ReadyPay Solar, is an expandable, lease-to-own solar home system financed through affordable instalments starting under $0.19 per day. We use real-time transaction data to create a unique credit score to finance power upgrades and other life-changing loans and open up a wider world of energy and financing for our customers.

To date, Fenix has sold over 150,000 ReadyPay Power systems in Uganda, bringing clean, reliable power for lights, phones, radios, TV and much more to over 900,000 people in Uganda.  In 2017, Fenix announced that it was joining forces with ENGIE, one of the world's largest energy companies and a leader in the move to renewable, decentralised and digital energy.  ENGIE will make significant commercial investments in Fenix to accelerate the path to our mission. Job Description

You should have significant experience designing and building data pipelines, service oriented systems, AWS storage and database management and always cultivate a scalable engineering culture. Our current stack is made up of; Python, Django, AWS, angularJS, Git, MySql, Linux Servers, Celery and Tornado. Our future stack is going to look a lot more diverse and you can have the freedom to design systems using the best tools for the job.

As Lead Architect, your main responsibilities are:

  • Define long-term platform requirements - Work with our Software Product Manager to understand the long-term needs of our core platform across sales, operations, finance, and data science.
  • Architect the evolution of our proprietary software platform: Leverage multiple resource to define a platform which is multi-tenant and self-service based on scalable frameworks that meet our long-term operational and data needs.
  • Lead development of next-generation platform - Implement and test defined architecture. Provide a foundation of tooling, automation, and documentation for broader development by the team.
  • Think about the future: A clear responsibility for this role is making sure Fenix is ready for the bright future ahead of us. You will own the architectural runway required to deliver our long-term product vision.
  • Continuous improvement of Fenix software  - Participate in code reviews. Work with the Software Product Manager and Software Engineering Manager to define and maintain best practices, tools, and an up to date training schedule.

Required Skills & Experience

  • 8+ years of experience
  • Bachelors or Masters in a relevant engineering discipline (Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science preferred)
  • Expert in one server-side language (Python preferred)
  • Experience creating and maintaining scalable web applications
  • Database administration and data management skills (RDBMS and preferably also NoSQL)
  • Server backend management experience (Unix, bash, etc.)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

Desired Skills

  • Experience with the Django web framework
  • Experience with modern asynchronous javascript server frameworks (Node.js, Express)
  • Experience building cloud-based and/or hybrid infrastructures.  Specific experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS) or a similar cloud-hosting platforms and container based scalable microservice deployment models
  • Prior experience with software design for testability (white-box, unit testing)
  • Deep understanding of and practical experience with data security and data integrity concepts
  • Experience with git and GitHub based source code management
  • Interest in developing products for emerging markets
  • Experience building hybrid infrastructures

Location

Ideally this role will be based in our beautiful Kampala office.  Candidates outside of Uganda will be considered assuming they are based in an amenable timezone for working with East Africa (GMT +3), and with the expectation of bi-annual travel to Kampala to work with the software development team on the ground.
