Job Overview

Fenix International is seeking a highly motivated and entrepreneurial Operations Director with leadership experience to contribute to the growth of Fenix across Uganda. The Operations Director will report to the Uganda Managing Director, will sit on the Uganda Leadership team and be based in Kampala, Uganda. The position will work directly with operations, sales, customer service and engineering teams on the ground to design, test, execute, analyze, and refine innovative operations systems at Fenix.

This position offers a unique opportunity to work with a creative and diverse team of business professionals and engineers in a fast-paced start up at the front lines of renewable energy and mobile payment technology.  Candidates must have a passion for entrepreneurship, renewable energy and sustainable development in Frontier Markets. The role will be working on critical projects with real and immediate impact and will have the opportunity to travel domestically to understand our customer base.

Key Responsibilities

  • Logistics and last mile distribution

    • Identify improved last-mile sales and distribution processes and mechanisms to reduce/minimize the cost of distribution, cost of sale, and inventory shrinkage

    • Critically assess in-county logistics options, routes and costs to optimize supply chain efficiency of solar power systems, accessories and after-sales service items

    • Forecast, plan, and execute field inventory deliveries 

    • Coordinate incoming stock deliveries from China with 3rd party logistics partner – this includes reviewing, correcting, and approving tax assessments and URA declaration forms

      • Review existing tax regimes to ensure Fenix is applying correct tax codes and minimizing tax implications on incoming goods

  • Production,  warehousing, and tech team

    • Oversee production team and facilities to ensure high quality product outputs of sellable inventory and timely stock preparation and delivery

    • Oversee tech team and facilities to ensure high quality product repair and refurbishment for customer service in the field

    • Implement and continuously manage organizational best practices at the production line and additional warehouses to ensure accurate stock records, efficient inventory movement, and organized storage 

  • Inventory Systems

    • Design systems in partnership with the software team (and global Operations team) to build (or purchase) and implement data-guided forecasting and inventory management systems

  • Customer Experience

    • Evaluate and optimize the operational processes of after sales services to ensure lowest costs and positive customer experience

    • Support tech team in operations, talent, and admin-related functions

  • Quality Assurance

    • Work closely with the QA team to ensure corrective, correction, and preventative actions are created and executed to minimize hardware risk and product failures

    • Lead Health and Safety committee to develop, implement, and manage Health and Safety Fenix policies and procedures

  • Organizational Improvements

    • Monitor and evaluate internal operation processes - collect feedback from stakeholders to continually evolve and improve

    • Analysis on cost of sale, cost of distribution, and after sales service to identify and improve cost and operational effectiveness

  • Strategic relationships

    • Manage applicable relationships with strategic partners, including but not limited to MTN, USEA, URA, Ministry of Finance, and Ministry of Energy

  • Provide general support to the Operations team in executing daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly deliverables

  • Identify Operations data needs, develop collection tools, analyze and present results

  • Manage continual education, implementation of improved processes within the Operations team

Required Skills & Experience

  • Leadership & project management experience: We are looking for entrepreneurial candidates who have started or contributed significantly to a particular project, team or new company and we especially value candidates who have seen projects through from start to finish, from design to scale up phase.

  • 5 years minimum work experience in operations and supply chain management

  • Commitment to live and work with Fenix in East Africa at least 2 years

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills (English), French/Mandarin a plus

  • Strong data analysis skills preferred, proficient usage of MS Excel is required

  • Entrepreneurial spirit and collaborative nature

  • Experience using database / ERP systems

  • Attention to detail, strategic thinker

  • Last mile distribution experience would be preferred
