Job Overview

This position will be part of the Global Commercial team that is based in Kampala, Uganda, led by the Chief Commercial Officer and working closely with the B2B Sales and Partnerships Directors.

This is an incredible opportunity for a talented individual to join a high-performing team that is passionate about pioneering expanded energy access and financial services to off-grid customers at the base of the pyramid. Key responsibilities will include crafting and closing both commercial and strategic partnerships in new markets and existing Fenix ones, as well as finding opportunities for Fenix to work with partners to impact our customers outside our core business. Your work will make a meaningful impact by enabling Fenix to continuously increase the size and scope of its reach, delivering life-changing products and services to our customers.

Key Responsibilities

Business Development 

  • Support sourcing, designing and closing needle-moving B2B commercial deals for Fenix. These are long-term, high investment partnerships that Fenix pursues across the business
  • Source and close smaller, local sales and new sales channels across current Fenix markets
  • Develop broader business development strategies and work cross-functionally to understand Fenix’s partnership needs and high value-add opportunities for the organization

Implementation & Stakeholder Management

  • Create cross-departmental work-plans and timelines for on-boarding for new partners
  • Manage a variety of stakeholders, internal and external, in ensuring a smooth and successful roll out with commercial partners in new countries (and continents!)
  • Liaise with local country sales leads in tracking and driving growth in local B2B sales opportunities

Implementing strategic projects

  • Develop “customer-impact” driven initiatives with academia, government and nonprofits where Fenix can leverage its existing infrastructure and last-mile network to further positively impact our customers and their communities
  • Create relationships with a variety of stakeholders in and surrounding our industry to be able to bring multiple stakeholders to the table and bring great ideas to life
  • Dream big! From acquiring agriculture insurance to support farmer repayment, to donating products to aid organizations to assist in disaster recovery in Mozambique, the opportunities are endless!

Required Skills & Experience

  • Relevant Bachelor’s degree
  • 2-3 years experience in Business Development or Strategy & Operations
  • High level of competency with analysis and project management
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills (English)
  • Excitement about Fenix’s mission and a deep desire to make an impact on off-grid and financially underserved customers in sub-Saharan Africa
  • Ability and drive to work independently
  • Strong hustle and desire to push the envelope

  • Endless curiosity
  • Commitment to live and work with Fenix in East Africa for at least 2 years

Desired Skills & Experience

  • 1 or 2 years experience or education in financial analysis and developing complex contracts
  • Education and/or work experience in East Africa
  • Leadership and project management experience: we are looking for entrepreneurial candidates who have started or contributed significantly to a particular project, team, or new company and we especially value candidates who have seen projects through from start to finish, from design to scale up phase
