About the role

As part of Fenix engagement to bring life-changing products and services to its customers Fenix is expanding its product base to include a new range of clean-cooking products and services (CCPS). Fenix is looking for an experienced, highly motivated, innovative and entrepreneurial Business Development Associate to join this new team. This position is a unique opportunity to join a rapidly growing company at the front lines of renewable and mobile payment technology. Candidates should expect a fast-paced startup culture. They will be expected to come up with innovative and daring solutions to new problems and to take ownership over a wide range of responsibilities.

As Business Development Associate, you will be in charge of bringing new insights to and advising the team decision makers. You will contribute to building unique marketing, sales, distribution and product development strategies, as well as create strong partnerships with local and international organisations.

You will report directly to the Head of Clean Cooking.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engage in business development by looking for new partners and building meaningful relationships to help develop the penetration of CCPS,
  • Identify new CCPS together with the Head of Clean Cooking,
  • Conduct or supervise field and desk research on various topic, ranging from policy, marketing to value chain analysis in order to inform decision making,
  • Design, organise, supervise and analyse quantitative surveys,
  • Design, organise and supervise qualitative research,
  • Conduct country-specific market analysis for clean cooking to inform Fenix growth  in Africa,
  • Design and implement pilots for new  CCPS, working cross-functionally with the clean  cooking team,
  • Analyse policy and work with government officials and organisations to facilitate access to CCPS,
  • Seek  innovative funding opportunities and participate in  writing winning grant applications,
  • Build budgets and complex financial models.

Required Skills & Experience

  • 3 years of professional experience in business development or similar activities,
  • A MSc or MA in Business Administration, Management, Economics or any relevant field,
  • Demonstrate passion for Fenix’s mission, values and customers,
  • Strong entrepreneurial and creative mindset,
  • Organised and able to follow through and prioritize tasks,
  • Very fast reader,
  • Strong critical and analytical thinking skills,
  • Strong attention to details,
  • Ability to synthesize complex information from different sources and to distinguish important information from details,
  • Strong ability to work with large amounts of data to develop strategies and make rigorous decisions,
  • Experience as a collaborative, hands on team player and eagerness to learn new tools and / or roll-up sleeves to get the job done,
  • Willingness to travel to Fenix markets across Africa,
  • Good understanding of the factors driving consumption in Africa,
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills in English,
  • Mastery of Excel, Word and Powerpoint,
  • Commitment to live and work in East Africa for at least 2 years.

Desired Skills

  • Experience working in the field of clean cooking, energy or financial services,
  • Experience working with last mile customers in Africa,
  • Experience in designing and conducting qualitative and quantitative research (focus groups, in-depth interviews, surveys),
  • Experience with Tableau or other data analytics tools,
  • Good understanding of accounting and finance concepts and tools,
  • Knowledge of French is definitely a plus,
  • Strong curiosity and open-mindedness.
