About the role

As part of Fenix engagement to bring life-changing to its customers Fenix is expanding its product base to include a new range of clean-cooking products and services (CCPS). Fenix is looking for an experienced, highly motivated, innovative, well organised and entrepreneurial Head of Operations to join this new team. This position is a unique opportunity to join a rapidly growing company at the front lines of renewable and mobile payment technology. Candidates should expect a fast-paced startup culture. They will be expected to come up with innovative and daring solutions to new problems and to take ownership over a wide range of responsibilities.

As Head of Operations, you will be in charge of supervising and managing all the logistics, procurements and distribution for the team, in Uganda and all over Africa where Fenix is expanding its clean cooking operations. You will also be in charge or designing, implementing and supervising quality and safety controls and processes.

You will report directly to the Head of Clean Cooking.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy

  • Design a sourcing and distribution strategy for Uganda and all the other countries where Fenix sells and distributes CCPS,
  • Implement this strategy with all the members of the team and other country team members,
  • Collaborate with the Clean Cooking Commercial Director to create an ambitious and efficient sales, distribution and delivery strategy.

Operations, procurement and logistics

  • Design, implement and supervise assembly and packing processes to maximise speed while keeping costs low and maintaining quality and safety standards,
  • Design, implement and supervise quality controls in Uganda and with suppliers and manufacturers in China,
  • Design, implement and supervise safety controls in Uganda and with suppliers and manufacturers in China,
  • Design safety and quality control trainings and supervise their implementation,
  • Manage sourcing of parts, products and supplies from China in close collaboration with Fenix’s team in China,
  • Manage transport and import of parts, products and supplies from China,
  • Optimize and supervise the use of the team’s vehicles,
  • Direct the movement, storage, or processing of inventory,
  • Manage activities related to purchasing, material requirements planning, controlling inventory, warehousing, or receiving,
  • Set up and manage relationship with local consultants and local authorities for corporate and statutory compliance in all the countries where Fenix is distributing its CCPS,
  • Set up and manage relationship and partnership with local suppliers and distributors, in all the countries where Fenix is distributing its CCPS,

Budget and financial projections

  • Contribute to the team budget and financial projection by providing transport and distribution costs estimates,
  • Collaborate on the team financial model using EBITDA targets and their relation to operational strategies to drive decision making.

Leadership

  • Build and provide inspiring leadership to a high performing operations team, including:
  • Recruiting and training mission-driven and highly qualified team members,
  • Setting inspiring and ambitious targets and motivating the team to achieve them, including testing and setting compensation and incentive structures across the teams,
  • Help create a culture across Fenix that recognizes and embraces Fenix’s vision and values, always encourages success, and supports all employees.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Demonstrate passion for Fenix’s mission, values and customers,
  • 5 years work experience in operations, distribution and logistics,
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills in English,
  • Professional experience working in at least one african country,
  • Significant leadership and management experience in operational strategy & management, ideally in Africa,
  • Strong entrepreneurial and creative mindset,
  • Organised, able to follow through and prioritize tasks,
  • Ability to work with large amounts of data to develop strategies and make rigorous decisions,
  • Strong critical and analytical thinking skills,
  • Strong attention to details,
  • Experience as a collaborative, hands on team player and eagerness to learn new tools and / or roll-up sleeves to get the job done,
  • Willingness to travel to Fenix markets across Africa and to visit suppliers and manufacturers in China,
  • Commitment to live and work in East Africa for at least 1-2 years,
  • Ability to manage a multicultural team.

Desired Skills

  • Understanding of rural BOP markets, microfinance, mobile telecom and/or renewable energy industries in Africa,
  • Experience working with last mile customers in Africa,
  • Experience with B2C distribution,
  • Experience with Tableau or other data analytics tools,
  • Demonstrated entrepreneurial or intrapreneurial experience inside a larger company,
  • Financial management and reporting,
  • Knowledge of French is definitely a strong plus.
